Teachers are always looking for ways to save instruction time. I have just completed 42 years of teaching elementary students in a general classroom setting and also within an individualized Reading Recovery Program.
Last year I used the CAL Tutor spelling program with my fourth grade class and the students were intrigued and motivated to work on spelling. By having CAL Tutor installed in a computer lab, all the students can work on spelling at their own pace saving 50% of instruction time, while increasing spelling achievement above grade level.
CAL Tutor is unique in that it can be used with instruction in spelling, vocabulary, reading, grammar and any area where information is provided and followed by a test for a specific response. For Reading Recovery, I believe CAL Tutor can be applied to develop sight vocabulary while students are developing early reading strategies.
